Old, man. Like, probably since the fifteen hundreds, when the New World was discovered. But probably not settled until the mid-seventeen hundreds, because it was used by the French, and the French weren't all that interested in colonization, just the raw materials (lumber, beaver skins) that the New World had in abundance.
